One powerful and effective way is to create space in our lives. Space that is empty, unwritten, unplanned, un-anything -- Just space. Stop right now and try this: Go get a glass of cold water and come and sit back down. Close your eyes and drink the water. Feel the water going down your throat. Feel the coolness in your mouth and body. See if you can taste the water. As the Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, might say, "While I drink my cool water, I am aware of my drinking." After you've finished your water, open your eyes and notice how the room looks. What seems sharper and more clear? What seems less necessary? What seems less urgent? What seems more immediate?
In the time that it took to drink a glass of cold water -- probably one minute or so -- you created space. In that space you were present to the 'living' part and the accoutrements and trappings of 'living' were silenced. You were drinking water.
